Implementing ERP is like undertaking any project. This means that there are 5 main components that are involved: Objective, Time, Cost/Budget, Materials, and Labor. I will look at these factors from the perspective of ERP.

Objective – This refers to the Modules that the organization is taking. This is mostly chosen from the pricing packages that your vendor is offering. It may be a combination of CRM, Finance, HR, payroll, Project Management, Supply Chain Management, Manufacturing or all of them.

There are 5 main components that are involved to determining how long your project will take: Objective, Time, Cost/Budget, Materials, and Labor

The objective is to have all your departments or business processes intergraded using the ERP system. This again will go all the way to customize your processes to fit in the ERP.

Time – The implementation process needs a time frame for making a demo/trial, setting up your processes in the system, training the users and making follow ups. The project manager and the client in most cases come up with the schedule for these activities depending on the objective of the project.

Cost/Budget – the ERP system will require a set up fee and for the monthly subscriptions. Once you have agreed on the payment terms, you should be able to start the implementation process immediately. Most vendors prefer a down payment for the process to start off.

Materials – in this case, the materials include provision for a trial, the server and contracts for agreements. The vendor and the client should be satisfied on these issues first before undertaking the implementation process.

Labor – the vendor, the project manager/IT manager of the client and the users represent the labor for the successful implementation of the ERP project. Once the client has given a go ahead, the lead person from the clients’ side (this can be the owner, the project or IT manager) should work with the vendor to ensure that the project is on schedule. Each should know their role from the onset to avoid clashing of activities.

These components vary sometimes and hence have a ripple effect on the time it will take to implement an ERP system. For example, the more modules a client takes, the more time it will take for the set up and the training. The more users, the more time it will take to train.

Based on the previous experiences at Wavuh, the implementation process takes three months or less; otherwise the above components vary and therefore have a direct impact on the process of implementing ERP.

As you move toward the midpoint of the article, this paragraph provides an opportunity to connect earlier ideas with new insights.
